Well, gracious. Good evening, afternoon, morning, wherever it is that you find yourself. I'm jann Arden. This is the jann Arden Podcast. I'm here with Caitlin green Sarah Burke, I am in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Actually, I'm in spring bank. Sarah is, I think, from the background. She is in her home in Toronto. I drove past her building with her and Dan on the way to the airport a few weeks ago, Caitlin is in front of her brick wall. She is also in her home that they have sold, that they have to get out of, that they need to buy a new house, and they have nowhere to go, and I don't know what's going to happen there. Welcome, ladies. What's new on this first week of spring,

it's so nice to hear Poppy in the background. I

was just gonna say that we have an audio cue for Jan. You being home, which is no longer sort of cat meowing in the background,

who sounds like a very, very tortured child.

Can we start with that when you got home? What's it like reuniting with poppy after so long?

So Angela had my my wonderful house sitter. She moved to Lac La Biche, which is about five hours north of here. It's all fine. She's still gonna babysit for Poppy when I have lengthy trips, which is fantastic, but she had to move her son was around to help her. So Poppy went over to Lisa and Bev's with Malik. I can't say his name too loud because he's here, because Poppy has a huge reaction. It's his favorite friend, and so I Lisa brought him here yesterday at 430 I did not get home until almost three o'clock in the morning. It was Tuesday morning, basically Monday night. My flight was delayed. I had a five hour layover in Vancouver, first world problem. It was fine, but when I did see Poppy, he came in. I got so many kisses. He was so excited to see me, and so, yeah, it's always so heartwarming that he still loves me. He probably loves Angela more at this point. I don't know. He's got his own life. He's got his own life. I'm not privy to the stuff that he does. He's got Teddy he's got a German shepherd that he's friends with. They party quite a bit. They do. I think, I think they micro dose stuff like, I don't know, he's got a whole life,

life, but Poppy,

come and say hi to the girls. Come on in.

Is he looking for bears out there. What's he up to?

There's probably nothing out there, just squirrels. The snow is melting, although five days from now, it's saying a snowflake. There's a snowflake on The Weather Channel. So March is still really topsy turvy here in Western Canada, certainly in southern Alberta, it's 10 degrees here today. It feels lovely. We went down the road. Beautiful day out. I had a knife, my dad's old Bowie hunting knife, stuck in my sports bra, because this is the week, I'm not kidding you, like the first week of spring where the bear comes out. It's like clockwork. Oh, so that crazy black bear, I don't know if it's the same bear, like, could it possibly be the same bear year after year? It might. So he just comes. He's thin or she, I don't know. I'm I'm no bear expert, but I'm just like, as we were walking out the gate, I'm like, I'm going back to get a knife. Like, like, that's gonna help me. That's just gonna say, it's not gonna help. What am I gonna do? I'm probably just gonna drop the dog, scream, drop my phone, run for a fence and be completely useless. But I feel like with the knife in my sports bra, I'm ready to take it out and at least wave it at said, bear, like you go away, Bear.

I've got the Lion King song in my head. Be prepared.

Getting the Revenant where you, like, cut open of an animal carcass and live inside and

get inside it, like, wow. You know, if it suddenly snows, I'll be ready. But you know what? I wouldn't want to hurt a fly. I don't know. I just grabbed a knife. I There's a couple of giant coyotes that are running around these days. It I know it's not going to help me. I sound ridiculous. That's all the time we have for our show today, folks. And years ago, it did catch me in the yard. And I'm sure I told you girls about this. I went out to feed the birds. I had MIDI, my little MIDI dog. She was older then, too. I grabbed the dog. It's like slow motion. My boots came off like I slipped. I fell on the ice. I hurt my knee. I hit my shin on the deck. I grabbed MIDI I threw her through the air like I launched her 10 feet through the air over the glass railing on my deck, so that least she was inside the glass railing. The bear did nothing. I'm scrambling. All I can remember is just being out of breath, that I was gonna have a heart attack. The bear did nothing. It sat there. I scrambled up on the deck, got through the gate, and the bear was just still sitting there. Like, wow, this lady has lost her shit and but I didn't know. I have no experience like so much for pretending to be dead.

Caitlin, what about you? You've been in Toronto all week, or was there called

that story? Caitlin, go ahead, what is happening in your neighborhood,

the neighborhood that I hope to still live in, but I'm not too sure. Yeah, no, we had a great weekend. We just chilled in the city. We've been in the city now for a straight run, no Collingwood escapes. And one thing we did do we've been trying to do like a city activity with will. So we did like the ROM. We did the a geo on our Gallery of Ontario. And this weekend we just did a classic young and Dundas movie. We just took will. We went to go see hoppers, the new Pixar film. You guys would love this. Like Sarah Dan and his girls would love this. I don't know if it's playing in Iceland, but like thortis and her kids would love this, and Jamie would love it.

She the kids went last week. They did, oh, my God. Okay, so we dropped them off. We took them in. They went in, and we were there to pick them up. When they came out with their friend Helga alone, I wanted to go to the movies. Well, it's Iceland it's such a different vibe. Okay, we dropped them off. We walked around the mall. In. We walked around the mall. They went in. Thortis took them in, put them in their seats, got their drinks and their stuff. But yeah, the kids loved hopper. I love Icelandic. So I couldn't go. I was bummed. I'm like, why can't I see this? She said it's in Icelandic, and there's no subtitles.

It's such a good it might be, and I'm a Pixar addict. It might be my favorite Pixar film. I can't yet decide what's so fantastic. The premise of it is roughly that it so it's kind of based around the idea of, like, environmentalism and conservation, like, broadly speaking, but it's a young girl who goes to university, and some of her professors have invented this way for them to transport like, like, put your mind, the mind of a human, in the body of a very, very accurate animatronic animals. And you can then speak to animals and live in their world as this robot animal. And so she goes in, she becomes a beaver. She is on an epic quest. And it is the cutest, most heartwarming. I mean, Pixar just makes incredible movies, really, at the end of the day for adults and for little kids. And the theater was about 5050, people with kids and people just going with like, groups of friends. I saw a whole crew of u of t engineering students, all guys with their, like, university leather jackets going to see after a matinee of hoppers. And I was so heartwarmed.

But yeah, going to matinees, that's fun. I loved it.

And it was so great. And and will, just like, loves being downtown. He loves the movies. He runs in, screaming everywhere, like the movie had kind of started when we got in a bit late and he just runs into a dark theater and is like, the movies, the movies, it's hoppers, like he's so pumped. That was great. And then I had Sarah, I had your day of hell, and my day of Heaven actually reset the mall. I spent a whole day by not a whole day. I spent a half a day by myself walking around the mall, and I just was like, This is my heaven. I have my AirPods in. I don't really do anything other than just get various drinks, and I buy stuff, and I people watch, and I just smell the mall smells, and I love it. So that's what I've been up to.

I might have to go to the mall, and I'm dreading it, so maybe I'll tap you.

Is there? Is there any updates on you guys? I know you're still house hunting. You lost out, yeah, you know, like a week ago on the bid that you had, because I guess everyone's bidding on houses. Is there any hope in sight? Like, what's Where are you living with? Jen? Yeah, so we might, are you leaving in my condo?

I don't know yet. Like, we have to be out of here by end of June, so hopefully we have a place to live by then we have seen in person, lots of houses, and none of them have been worth bidding on for us. So I was assured by our realtor that it's been March Break, and this is like the two kind of slow weeks of the spring market, which then pick up after this. So hopefully that turns out to be true, because you're gonna find a perfect place. Thank you. From, as my grandma will say, from your lips to God's ears,

well, I think you will find the perfect place. And it's funny, you know, these disappointments, you do get a chance to look back, you know, a year or two years from now, go God. Thank God we didn't get that place, because this is so much better. I. Yeah, and Sarah, you are now commuting like to the countryside and to your condo with Dan.

Just wait, wait till you hear this. I just got home for the first time in six days. Oh, my God. Okay. Yeah, he came for my birthday last week, which was last Thursday. Sarah, I'm 39 audible. I don't care.

Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, although it's belated, Sarah, happy birthday to you. I'm so sorry. I will take dinner.

I don't I do. I'm good. 40 might be a bigger birthday, but 39 like, you know, it's like, you wake up, you go to bed, it's the same as always, come on. But we did have a we had a spa day, which was really nice, and we went to my cottage in between, because he had a snowboarding competition, judging a snowboarding competition. Yes. So, like, instead of coming all the way back to the city, we just decided to stay up there. And one thing that was really fun that we did my dad, is he's not enthusiastic about the cottage being used when he's not there. He has those little cameras, like, on the property, and he knew we were going up, but we built a giant snowman, like children right in front of the camera. And he was like, the fuck are you doing? So funny. Like, giant, like, we rolled the balls, like, all up and down the hill to make, like, giant snowman balls. It was awesome. So that was really fun. And then, yeah, it was at horseshoe resort for the last four days, and it's the end of snowboard season. So, so sad. Do you snowboard a little bit. I wouldn't call myself a snowboarder, but I can dabble. I'm more of a skier. Okay, okay, yeah, I can definitely ski, but I've been on the board a few times, and Dan's like, we're working on it for sure.

Okay, I need to enlist Dan to help me remember how to snowboard again at some point, because I used to do it when I was in high school. I was actually on the cover of a raven ski and snowboard club brochure, I'll have you know, but I wasn't very good. So that was some false advertising.

I feel like we should totally do that with will too,

yeah, because we got his little chubby self on skis and he did not approve. We were on in and out of those ski

those. That's what we thought.

But then it was like, No. Was like, No, he you should see his girls like they

the three year old is better than me. It's crazy. So anyway, yeah, that's my week.

Love how this last few months have unfold. Unfolded for you, because I don't think you could have imagined. You know, people think that that that changes in life are so distant and that, oh, it just seems like an impossibility for things to shift and for you to go into these different phases of your life. And that's simply not how it works. You know, my own mother used to say to me, as quickly as things go bad, that's how quickly they go good. But we don't think in those terms, you know, when something terrible happens, and usually it's an accident, or you get diagnosed with something, or, you know, you stick a knife through your wrist, like I did trying to open a letter. Like things happen very quickly, but the good things happen really quickly too, like they just do, and your life can completely transform in in a matter of moments and and this past, you know, year has really taught me that, and not just in personal relationships, but in life and in new opportunities, like creative opportunities or job opportunities or, you know, hobbies like, you never know Who you're going to meet or what you're gonna do. You just don't know. So it's so easy to get into those ruts, isn't it? Yeah.

But I also think that, you know, six months ago, I would have been like, oh my god, time alone. Like, get out of here after six days with someone. But that's what's also nice, is like, I already miss him, and I just said goodbye this morning. So, yeah, okay, freak accident. What happened to you? Stabbed your What?

No, I mean, it's better. I should have had, like a little stitch. But, you know those scissors that come apart? Yes, I know they click together, and I think I bought them at Costco, but Costco is not responsible this. And I was just opening a letter, and I opened up the scissors. And I was just going to kind of use the end of the one of the scissor blades to just kind of open this envelope, and it just slipped and it literally stuck into my wrist. It was like, stuck in there. And I thought, oh, do I pull this out? And so I did pull it out. And it was quite it was quite the, quite the scene over here. I didn't really hurt. It was so quick, and then I just kind of pinched it together for an hour. I just literally got a paper towel and pinched it together, but it won't I think I'm gonna have a nice, cute little scar, but it's not that bad. But it was my wrist. It could have been worse.

That's our badass hook. Was jann Arden right there.

Yeah, together. You know, could I have stitched it up myself? No, I could not have. Let's go to the scroll with Caitlin green and see what she's got for us today.

I needed to at least talk a little teeny, tiny bit about the Oscars, and I know they were last weekend, so I won't, I won't bore everyone with the winners. You know the winners. You know the highlights. But I do want to touch on the fact that Conor O'Brien did such a fantastic job, according to the executives at Disney, that they said that if he wants the gig forever, it's his. And if you remember, he did a sketch where he was named host for life. It was kind of a play on the end of one battle after another, and he might actually have turned this bit into reality. So I just want to say congratulations to Conan on what might be the most successful bit commitment in television history, if he comes back and does the Oscars again next year. I don't know if he's going to, but I just like that, because there was some conversation too around, like whether or not some people thought he did a great job. I really liked it. I thought the show this year was maybe soft in some areas, but not for hosting related reasons. So for all the other Conan fans out there, he's going to come back. Also, my favorite post Oscars moment has to be Michael B Jordan going viral for his trip to In N Out burger. Sarah, did you see this? I think I did. I did. He had a full on fan mob situation, because In N Out burger is this, like, iconic West Coast burger chain, and a lot of celebrities go there after the Oscars because they're starving. Some of these people probably haven't eaten in like, weeks. And then,

like, so far from LA, like, in a Colorado In N Out Burger lineup, and it's still crazy,

oh yeah. And so like, after the closest In and Out Burger location to where the Awards are held is always inundated with celebs. They go there. It's like, this can't be fun photo op moment. So he goes there, trophy in hand, and he's picking up tons and tons of food. He sets the trophy down the like, the Oscar is on the stainless steel counter of the pickup orders, and he's just standing there and his photographer burger grease on it. There's burger grease everywhere. I was like, This is so cool and so real. And I really, I really like that. He won for sinners. I mean hell, he played two different roles. So good for him. And the other thing that I think is funny, I didn't know there was a word for this, but I don't know if anyone caught when Robert Downey, Jr accidentally called Channing Tatum tanning Chatham.

He had done that a million times.

Okay, so this is the 2026, version of Adele dazeen. You know when John Travolta accidentally meant to say Adina Menzel and said, and now Adele Dazeem, it's called spoonerism. I didn't know there was a word for this. This is when your brain swaps sounds because you're tired or nervous. So when that happens, it's called spoonerism. I don't know where they came up with that term, but it is real, and that's what happens. Also. There's been all this conversation around what the heck's gonna happen to Kelly Clarkson's TV show after she's done? Is pink going to be taking over? No, Pink's not going to be taking over. And apparently, NBC Universal is getting out of daytime syndicated TV altogether. They're saying shows like Access Hollywood are being canceled because audiences have moved to social media, streaming and, hey, podcasts. So they say they're no longer going to be making this sort of like syndication first content, including lots of daytime TV. And I feel like we've grown up watching daytime TV for so much of our life. It's kind of like this big story. So I don't know you're not gonna, if you, if you love Kelly Clarkson, you love pink, I'm sorry, but you're not gonna be seeing them. And last but not least, I do want to add in a couple of quick things. One, I know Jan, being the like space and science aficionado that she is, NASA, is planning another moon mission that only has a 50% success rate, which is kind of a scary thing to say out loud, but they're planning to send humans to the Dark Side of the Moon again. So hopefully this goes well, and I think that the launch is planned for April 1. I don't know how I feel about doing the launch on April Fool's Day, but anyways, and also, a seven ton asteroid just exploded over Ohio, loud enough to shake houses. It like broke the sound barrier, and you could hear it, apparently, as far as like New Hampshire and New York. So thankfully, there was obviously no contact. But if you saw that there was an asteroid trending, it's because it somehow broke up over Ohio. There we have it.

So we just lost Caitlin. We're having some internet problems, but because of timing and scheduling with us this week, we kind of have to proceed. But just know that some of the stuff that we're going to talk about today, about today, she sent us a lot of stories for the for the podcast,

and Sarah and I are going to do our own very wonderful spin on them. And I stumbled across this this morning. And I think I've told you guys that I follow something called Morning brew, and I signed up. Yeah, I signed up for that. Yeah, I signed up for last year. I think it's a businessy kind of thing. It's a lot of stock market stuff. Morning brew you can go on. It's a daily thing that you get. It's kind of fun. I wake up to that sometimes, and I just look what's going on in the world. But they really condense things, which I love. It's just these little hits, but a story that was particularly interesting to. Me this morning was open AI, which is an AI company. Obviously, they had a headline a BTS

company, yes.

So they are tinkering with, and I think they have done this already, an adult version, a sexy, sexy version, like a purposefully sexy version of Did you ever see the movie Her with joking Phoenix and he fell in love. He fell in love with the voice on his AI thing on his phone. But anyway, in real life, the company is calling it smut, not pornography. What the difference is, ladies and gentlemen, I do not know, but it's adult mode that's in parentheses of what they're calling it is adult mode for chat GPT, which will allow for sexy chats, despite objections from the company's own advisory council. So the people that they have in place, you know, maybe think of them as a board of moral directors are advising against this. One expert said that following at least one documented suicide involving a child having sexualized chats with a character, AI bot, which was adding a seductive tone to jet chat. GPT may turn the bot into a sexy suicide coach. I find this so disconcerting. Obviously, sex cells, we know that, but they're really dappling in the hundreds of 1000s, of millions, of billions of dollars that the sex world generates. So thoughts on that, guys, would you be interested in a sexy Hi, I want to do this and this and that to you, but this is the gist of it, like, what would you do to me? You can ask chat GPT, and they'll have a sexy male or female voice, tell you what exactly they'll do. I don't know.

I just learned in the parents Uncharted podcast that I produce, because she's all over topics like this, I just learned that, like the biggest problem that guidance counselors are having students come in for in the high school environment is kids addicted to porn in high school. So doesn't like me. So you think about the accessibility of something like this and like, they're past that age of like, you using parental controls, and Caitlin, I'm sure you have parental controls on some stuff for will, like, when he's on an iPad and whatever, for sure, always, yeah, yeah. So these are the kids that are, like, past that point, maybe have their own devices. And this is when it starts to kind of unravel. Kind of unravel things like this prey on, you know, men and their insecurities.

And, yeah, yeah, I think it's, it's when I saw the movie her, I thought to myself, this could actually happen.

But, you know, you got all these billionaires involved saying, you know, it's not porn. That's the stance that they're taking that there's age verification systems that statistically have been proven to fail at least 12% of the time, and you know that they're just calling it an enhanced like conversation. But anyway, I was just asked by Universal my record company, they said, AI's coming. It was a blanket statement that went out to all their artists, and basically they want me to sign off on a couple of different aspects of AI in the company, and that is allowing users, of fans, whomever to remix my music, to be able to go in, could I be your girl, good, mother, insensitive, whatever, and remix it any way they want. They can go in with the tools provided with, you know, drum beats, electric guitars, bass, whatever. And they can do that. They can recreate a soundscape of, you know, my most popular songs, or whatever. The other part of this is using my voice to create new material. So using my voice to which I'm not going to sign off on, but you know, is that going to matter if I sign off on it or not? You know, legally, they have an obligation not to supply those files. But I think anyone out there who's got the wherewithal with technology could easily lift my vocal and do whatever they want with it. It's coming. I don't think it's going to be contingent on, you know what universal releases or doesn't release. So, yeah, it's just an interesting, an interesting thing that is

interesting, allowing fans access fans, okay, okay,

yeah, to my voice, like they can take the tone of my voice, whatever, put it into AI. I don't know how it works, but it's coming. It's unstoppable. There's nothing we can do about it in the long term. I think maybe in the short term, there's a way of, like, staving it off.

But even like. Where we're recording right now, we record our podcast in like, a digital studio. And there's options in a lot of these Digital Studios that like, let's say I needed you to say something like a pickup somewhere that we needed for one of our guests, or something like, I could get Riverside to use your recorded voice to make that like, that's already a thing here, isn't that crazy?

Yeah, like I said, Sarah, it's, I think it's an unavoidable progression of technology, and what people are going to have to decide is how they're going to use it, how much of it they're going to use in their life. You know, what they're going to allow their children to to access? You know, I worry about vulnerable kids. And one person I do want to have on here, not just because she's my fiance, but thortis entire foundation, like nordreif, is now almost exclusively dealing in AI, how it's affecting queer people, how it's affecting the trans community, how it's how it's radicalizing young men like globally, you know, they're doing most of their studies in in the UA, but she just said, it's, it's going to be catastrophic, and it already is, of what's happening with notify, you know, things that can literally take clothes off people. It's funny when you put a man into some of these apps that are created by AI, like a man in a suit, and ask it to make it nude. It makes it into a nude woman. So clearly, the patriarchy is involved. I mean, I won't speak to it, but we will, I promise you, we will have thortis Elva on here in the next month or so. If you know, I can talk her into it to come and speak to that. She said she'd very much, you know, be on

that last episode. It was our recall last week, actually, by the way. So if you want to download the last episode before this one, and there were some really interesting resources that she gave us for the show notes Episode Two that I wanted to point to. So, yeah, yeah, we're not experts on this stuff, but someone like thordas, she's up on exactly what's going on with all that stuff. And that's so crazy that, like, it's now time for the labels to go through those comments.

It was literally a really formal looking letter that said, you know, we're really excited about this new era in music and what it comes down to. It doesn't matter what the applications of technology. It's always going to be about a financial gain for someone and how to make money. That's it, full stop. This is about generating trillions of dollars. And it's a handful of people that are involved in these and it is the already billionaires. But you know, you have to wonder, you know, if this stuff is gonna just be smart enough to take over systems, whether it's nuclear power plants or launching missiles at other countries, like we really don't know. And if you talk to experts or listen to their sort of Op Ed pieces, like read them or or follow that kind of stuff, they literally say to you, we don't know, we don't know how fast these things can learn. Like, how do you even categorize it? What is AI? So watching that unfold is going to be really something.

So let's get into this. I know we've lost Caitlin, but by God, she has sent us this topic, and when I read about it a few days ago, I'm like, did not know that. I'm sure there's parents everywhere that would appreciate this Home Depot daycare, because Caitlin does have a small child in her life, and I think I have seen people drag kids through Home Depot a million times. I can't think of a more boring store for kids really

Canadian Tire like sign me up if

you are a parent and you think you're running out of ideas of how to keep your kids occupied in Home Depot. There's a viral video from a San Diego mom, and it shows her toddler, who is absolutely over the moon, thrilled to explore the aisles of the store. She's not the only one. So I was saying it's boring, because as a child, I don't think I'd want to go through there. But apparently, these little mines, that's as a way to, I mean, explain it to me, Sarah, this is that they're using this as a as daycare, to put them through Home Depot,

like a sensory experience. So like the lights, the rugs, the plants, I would be in the plant aisle, you know, have a problem buying plants, like, I cannot go to a section in a Home Depot or a Canadian Tire without leaving with a new plant. One mom said it's the world's biggest busy board. So the fuzzy carpets, they're just like touching it with their hands. They get on their hands and knees sometimes, right screens with plants. Like, you know how, if you're looking to see if a plant is real or not, you kind of, like, want to touch the leaves. Yes, yes, yeah. So they're touching all the things.

So you're having a, like, a really wintry day here in Canada, and you. Pack your child into your car and take them to Home Depot. You're not really going to buy anything. You're literally going to walk through the aisles and try and tire your child out. They're calling it, well, this woman from San Diego is calling it a basically free, climate controlled playground. They're talking about parental burnout, affecting get this folks, more than half of North American parents. Are you one of those parents? Would you like to leave us a voice note? I encourage you to do so. I don't have kids. I mean, you're I have I'm about to have step children. I take that back. I'm about to have step children. And, yeah, they need a lot of activities. But I'm so lucky that, you know, thortis Wonderful. Kids are seven years old. They're outdoorsy, like in Iceland. You boot your kid outside, you put them in a snow suit, and they are out there, climbing trees, finding sticks, climbing they're just there's a different vibe over there. I can't explain it. They're not on. Yes, they do have tablet time. I'm not gonna lie, but I think really limit limits it. It's, I think it's 35 or 45 minutes. That's it. And it's all parental controlled. Of course, it's Thoris. She's gonna control every aspect of what they see.

Another thing that Caitlin brought us, that I just thought goes with our like spring vibe today, since it is the first day of spring when this episode A declutter rule, the 2020 rule. So Jan, especially because you've been in and out of the home, I don't know about you, but like, because I was just away for six days, and I just came back when I was going to put things away in my closet, in the drawers, I was almost like, Oh, I got to switch things over for spring, right? And there's a lot of stuff I definitely haven't worn in the last year. So the 2020 rule is, if you could replace an item in 20 minutes for $20 or less, let it go.

If you can replace the item for $20 in 20 minutes or less, you get rid of it.

The hope is, though, that we're not like just constantly buying and buying and buying. Like I'm thinking, Well, I feel

like that's counterintuitive to any kind of climate crises going on. I mean, they talk about seeing piles and I mean acres, hundreds and hundreds of acres of mountains of clothing in places like Mexico, South America. I'm sure it's in a point. You can see it from space. I mean, I probably took 15 bags out of my closet, big green garbage bags in the last two years. And I'll tell you right now, there's another five or six or seven or eight that need to come out of there. It's stuff I do not wear, and I don't know, and most women will tell you, they'll agree with me, you're waiting to be a certain size. Oh, yeah, I'll get into those jeans five pounds from now, or 10 pounds from now. I'm guilty of that. I've got stuff like that. I've been 30 pounds heavier and I've been 30 pounds lighter in my life. You know? I definitely have that pendulum, and I do hang on to stuff, thinking I'll get to that, but I want to clear stuff out. But you're right, if I can get rid of five bags of clothes, and if I happen to need a plaid jacket, I'm sure I could find something to replace it.

When you're getting rid of stuff, think of the shelters. Think of, you know, those places it doesn't have, I donate everything. Yeah, it doesn't have to be, you know, a thrift shop or whatever, like, if you're looking to get paid for it, that's a different thing, especially if you've got designer stuff. It's still great that it's like, not being thrown out, right? So no shame to whatever you do with it. But there's someone who could probably use it if it's in good shape. That's all.

There is some stuff that I'll take to consignment. Not gonna lie, there's a place called Vespucci in Calgary. Shout out to Vespucci, and it is designer consignment. And you can get really great deals there, like, stuff that would cost you 800 bucks, is 80 bucks, perfect. But anyway, I have taken stuff in there, and they've turned a lot of it down. I went in there for like, with like, 25 pieces, and they're like, nope, nope. They literally have these women that go through it. They don't see any value in it. They're like, sorry, excuse me. We'll take five out of these 20 pieces. I'm like, Okay,

last note on spring, what is one of your spring traditions?

There's a lot of cleaning. So this morning, I was just looking outside. This is all yard stuff. I don't know about your deck at home, but I'm sure you take it down during the winter if you've got chairs out there or plants or okay, everything just stays out on it. All. My umbrellas are put away. The furniture is covered up, you know, the wickers all put over in one corner so it looks like shit right now. So one thing that I do need to do power wash too early for that, though I know that I won't even be looking at doing that until April. You like power washing. I just saw like,

No, I just remember you love power washing. And the way that I do love power washing, you made such a big deal about power. Washing on the show last year, and if I remember correctly, in a wonder bra,

don't judge me. But yes, wonder bra and power washing goes together quite well. Thank you very much. Wonder raw just sent me another bra that is wireless not one month ago. And I don't know if I mentioned that, but thank you. Wonder raw, yeah, I should be out there in my beautiful red shorts from Costco that I've had for 10 years that people make fun of, but god damn it, I'm going to keep wearing them. But yeah, so spring cleaning around here, it looks like hell. I don't know how the driveway gets so much crap on it, but there's broken branches and leaves and rocks, and I don't know what happens in the winter, I really It looks like a glacier went through my raw my yard, and just dragged shit with it.

But I'm showing you, if you're on our YouTube, what my thing is. So I'm gonna move my microphone so you can see my plants. Okay, they look good. So one of those was purchased on the first day of spring last year, and I've been like propagating, so I have little small ones in other places, but, but I my tradition is buying myself a new plant on the first day of spring every year, little local plant shop, I always go take the dog on a walk, get a new plant. So that's okay.

I think that's perfect. I mean, I don't have anything like tradition wise. I cannot put a plant out here, a hanging plant, or anything otherwise, until May long weekend, because it freezes. I can't plant my garden. I just can't do it. Other people get luckier. But the the weather, the growing zone that I'm in is they will all tell you, don't do it. So anyway, that's kind of a drag. I mean, to think that I literally have another two months, it's

it'll come faster than you think. Don't worry. Don't worry,

pressing me. We are going to listen to voice notes. Caitlin's internet is just not cooperating today. She's frustrated. So Sarah and I thought we would pull up some voice notes.

Good morning, beauties. It's Mattia from Prince George actually coming to you live from what you call Mexico on my vacation, $25 and under things that bring you joy. My first one is coffee. My second one is burning incense, which I don't know the name of, but I know it's Cedarwood. And also Patreon.

Have a great day, beauties. God, my song is catching on.

Sarah, yeah, if you didn't listen to that Patreon episode yet, and you maybe are thinking about subscribing, one of the things that we discussed was like an item that's under $25 that just brings you a whole bunch of joy. Yeah, coffee. I am with you. I'm so with you.

Did I tell you that I started drinking coffee again after 25 years because of thortis? No, she really loves coffee, and she drinks coffee and she makes coffee in that little European steel little thing that you put on the stove, and it's a tiny, little mini percolator. And then they foam milk and they anyway. I also bought us a Nespresso machine. Yes, Nespresso, you can sponsor us. But I really missed my Nespresso machine in Iceland, so I bought one there anyway. Yes, I've started drinking coffee again. I agree. Under 25 bucks, it's I have one cup a day, or maybe two, the

Nespresso thing, just quickly before we move on the Nespresso thing. Were you always on, like, decaf pods before?

But now I'm having, like, a regular coffee. And it's so funny, because I used to think that coffee just made me feel wired and my heart was Skippy. Well, it's called alcohol, and I was always, you know, hung over 25 years ago. It was, I don't think it was ever anything to do with coffee, but I think a coffee a day. There's a lot of science behind how great it is for you. But thank you for that voice note, and thank you for, you know, singing the Patreon song. And we may lift your voice and use it using AI anyway. What's our next? Yeah. Hi Jan. Hi Caitlin. Hi Sarah. This is Lake and I'm calling from Burlington, Ontario. Just wanted to say hello and tell you ladies, how much I enjoy listening to your show, Jan. I'm just wondering if you plan on doing any kind of tribute to James Van Der Beek. Recently, I've been re watching the amazing Dawson's Creek series with, oh, sadly, you know, much melancholy, because it truly was the show of our time. I'm your vintage. So I'm just wondering many of your songs were highlighted on that series, and if I've missed it, my apologies. But I was just wondering if you're going to do any kind of a tribute to James Van Der Beek, who we sadly lost in February. Just re watching the show reminded me how amazing this young man was as a an actor, and apparently, just an amazing father too. So that's all for now, and thank you and keep doing what you. Doing ladies take care for now. Bye. Well, thank you for pointing that out. And and, yes, Dawson's Creek used inordinate amount of my songs back in the day, and I was very thrilled about it. And of course, I also did the theme song for Dawson's Creek. Paula Cole had a theme song. It's a long story. We should probably dedicate an entire podcast to the debacle that was the Dawson's Creek theme song. My song was called, run like mad. Paula Cole had a song like called, I don't want to wait, which was the original, the the OG, but, yeah, James, you know, I'll just do a quick shout out to to him and his family right now. It's very tragic when a young man dies, I believe he was either in his late 40s or very early 50s, I think a father of four and and a terrific guy, a nice kid, and colon cancer, I think is what he passed away from. And, you know, fought really hard to be here, but yeah, it is. It's absolutely tragic. And I don't know what to say. I didn't know him personally, but I certainly was a fan of the show. And like you said, we're all of a certain vintage that grew up watching Dawson's Creek, and I'll always have a special connection to that show. So, but thank you. You did a beautiful tribute just now. So thanks

for that. Yeah, so February 11 is when we lost him. He has six kids, six lot of children. Yeah, six kids. And yeah, he was pretty public since his diagnosis in 2023 all the way through. So that's another interesting thing. Like, kind of reminded me of the Shannon Doherty, like, how she was kind of in real time going through it in the public Yeah, these 90s stars that it's, I mean, they're far too young. It's really, really sad. I love that show so much, and to be honest, I think we would have had a tribute. We've just had a lot of guests recently, like, this is the first episode without a guest in a while, so thanks for pointing that out. You want another one? Yeah? Thank you. Yes. Let's do it.

Hi, Jan, Sarah and Caitlin. My name is Kathy. I live in Ontario, and I'm 66 years old. I love listening to your podcast, but I haven't yet joined the Patreon. As I'm concerned for those people who cannot afford it, and I know that they exist. I just wanted to correct you that you can bring knitting needles on a plane. I do it all the time. I enjoy knitting on a plane. It's the scissors that aren't allowed. Okay, I listen weekly as I'm quilting, and I really enjoy the pod and the guests. Keep up the great work.

Thanks. Well, thank you for the knitting needle update. So early days, like 911 is kind of where it started, because I think I was, was I confused about this in my mind, like it was, was knitting needles not like part of the thing that you couldn't fly with after 911, like 20 years ago, I

bet you it was like certain airlines that makes sense to me.

Well, a knitting needle is basically a weapon. So, yeah, for a while there you couldn't even bring plastic utensils, like a plastic knife was anyway. Thank you for the update. For those of you who are knitting, you can take your knitting needles on a plane, but don't take your damn scissors.

Hi, Jen Caitlin and Sarah. This is Jennifer calling from Vancouver Island, and I'm just calling to thank you for all of your time and energy that you put in the podcast and Patreon. I am such a big fan, Jan. I've been listening to your music since my mom introduced me to you in the 90s when I was a kid. I've seen you several times in concert over the years, and they're always such great shows, always a little like funnier than I expect. And I've been a fan of the podcast since the beginning in spring 2020, when you had Adam on the team, it was such an uncertain time, and the podcast really provided comfort and laughter, and still does, as we unfortunately continue to face so much uncertainty, I really tune in to just have a bit of break from from that, but also to hear your thoughts and get a bit of a Canadian perspective. So thank you for the honest conversations finding humor and chaos in or humor in this chaos of life, exactly. And for the only Jans content, I'm a huge fan of the Patreon. I would love to hear a bit more about how you prep for your episodes. How far in advance do you plan them out? Do you all come up with topics as a team approach? Or maybe it depends on just everyone's capacity. Any further insight into the podcast is really interesting, but really thanks for all of the episodes, and I hope you keep it up. Huge fan.

Thank you. Thank you. Caitlin isn't here. I'm sure she'd have something to say about it, but Sarah, like our prep, Caitlin does give us a lot of show ideas, but we all kind of contribute, like little things that we're talking about. And, yeah,

there's a group chat, and we run stuff by each other in the group chat, for sure, we have, like, a couple, you know, we have, like, our own, like shared drive of stuff, where we put prep ideas that we want to make sure that we don't forget about that we could come back to if we don't get to them. Because, as you know, sometimes we go off the rails, right? Yeah, but all the pop culture stuff, definitely Caitlin. Like, there's kind of two producer hats, right? There's like Chase production, which is like booking guests and like making sure that we come prepared with topics. And then there's like technical production, which is what I do a lot of we help each other out with all that stuff. Like, it's kind of like a revolving door. jann brings us, you know stuff this morning. She's like, I want to talk about dinosaurs or whatever it is. And it's like, okay,

yeah, well, it's true. Sometimes I will just go off on a tangent, and we will literally have four or five things that the girls have brought in that we don't even get to. I'm like, I'm sorry, yeah, because, as we all know, things happen in real time. Most of our listeners love personal stories and anecdotal things. Of, you know, what's happening in Sarah's life, and Caitlin's looking for a house, and she's got, you know, yeah, Will. And of course, I'm trekking around to Iceland these days and still working on a book and working on a new record, and, you know, just life grief and anxiety and depression. And we just talked to Alanna again about sleep a couple of weeks ago. So we just appreciate the fact that you are enjoying the Patreon and liking the content, and you've obviously been with us for a long time, if you're talking about Adam in the old days and going through covid. But thank you so much for listening. Appreciate it so much. And I think that's our show for today,

our reminder we are reading vigil in our book bag. So that's the new read

for I'm halfway through and loving it.

I got the physical listening, so it's only this, like, this big if you're watching on YouTube. I got my little fingers together, so I feel like it's, it's a quicker read, right? A little bit quicker. But there's a lot of comments in our Patreon about that first chapter being like, what the or no, there's no chapter.

The hell there isn't any chapters. It's just all the way through, yeah?

But yeah, people trying to figure out, like, right off the hop, what's going on. So I don't even try. I just cracked a few pages. I got to keep going. But yeah, with all the like, time away from home, I was like, it's good to have a book around right now. I'm gonna figure that out. And yeah for Patreon this week,

I do want to talk about women and female friends, and I am curious to hear what everyone thinks about female friends, because I sometimes they can be those long friendships can be as devastating as a divorce when you break up these relationships we've talked about like I know we have, and also meeting new friends when you are in your 40s, 50s and 60s, it's much different than meeting friends in your 20s and 30s. So we'll talk about that as well. But anyways, thanks for listening. You can find us on your favorite streamer. Big thanks to all our our sponsors of this show, and, of course, to Sarah and Caitlin, who come along on this crazy journey with me week after week, and we'll see you guys out there. We'll see you on the other side of Patreon.

And I just want to mention, we have an announcement coming Monday about our next live show, as always, the only Jans, if you're with us on Patreon. You are going to be the first to hear about this. You will also have access to the show before anyone else with a promo code. So another reason you might want to think about becoming an only jann this weekend. Look after yourselves.

Spring is here. Spring has sprung. Ladies and gentlemen, the worst is over. Maybe it's not, but let's keep believing that it is, we'll see you next time. Totally Do you?
